Founded in 1997, the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) promotes Azorean culture and shared whaling heritage by raising awareness and pride within New England’s Azorean-American community.

Funds raised from this event will support the participation of Azorean Maritime Heritage Society’s teams in the 11th International Azorean Whaleboat Regatta this September in the Azores, as well as contribute to the organization’s cultural programming and community scholarship fund.

“There are only 63 Azorean whaleboats remaining in the world,” according to the AMHS website. Three of those Azorean whaleboats — the only three in the United States — are in New Bedford and maintained by AMHS.
