A man with 26 theft offences to his name was in court for stealing two bottles of wine from Marks & Spencer.
David Harrison, 49, of Scalebeck Court, Gray Street, Workington, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop, when he appeared at Workington Magistrates’ Court today.
Peter Kelly, prosecuting, said Harrison had entered Marks & Spencer in Workington at about 3pm on February 9.
He had walked to the wine section, taken two bottles of wine worth £16, and left.
An off-duty police officer had given chase and the defendant was detained outside the Washington Central hotel.
There was no suggestion the items had been damaged in any way and were suitable for re-sale, the court was told.
Mr Kelly said Harrison had 26 theft offences recorded against him.
John Cooper, defending, said:”He was desperate for money. He was going to swap it for cigarettes.
“He has pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.”
Harrison was fined £40 and must pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
