Numerous events will be happening in the area during the weekend of Saturday, April 30.

Book Walk

National Library Week is April 3-9, and the Sedalia Public Library and Boonslick Regional Library are celebrating the entire month of April by hosting a Book Walk.

Plan some time to walk with your favorite young reader and tour downtown while reading one story from Boonslick Regional Library from April 1-15 and another story from the Sedalia Public Library from April 16-30.

Book check-out cards are available from participating downtown merchants and both libraries. The check-out cards will guide you through the story by directing you to the consecutively numbered posters displayed in each storefront window. Visit each store and get your card initialed. The Book Walk will end at that week’s library sponsor, where you can redeem your card for a prize.

Roadrunners Athletics

State Fair Community College baseball will host St. Charles Community College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, April 29 at Liberty Park Stadium.

SFCC student art show

State Fair Community College’s student art exhibition opened April 14 in the Goddard Gallery of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the Sedalia campus. Admission is free.  

This year’s exhibition will showcase new directions and introduce new technologies that the students are exploring in the Art program, including computer-based VR (virtual reality) tools. The students’ artwork will be displayed through May 8.  

Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays. Admission is free.

‘Spongebob Musical’

Bikini Bottom must be protected from an exploding volcano at all costs and theatre students at State Fair Community College plan to do that in the production of “The SpongeBob Musical.”

“The SpongeBob Musical ” will perform April 28 through May 1 in the Stauffacher Theatre at State Fair Community College. Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5. Seniors over 60 years of age may get a free ticket to the matinee performance. Lub Dub

The Bothwell Foundation will host the annual Lub Dub 5K/10K Run/Walk and 30-Day Challenge on Saturday, April 30. All races start and end at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

All proceeds will benefit the Bothwell Foundation Camye Callis Gaspard Memorial Heart Fund to provide education and awareness of heart disease in Pettis and Benton County.

Packet pick-up/race day registration will be from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and the run/walk begins at 8 a.m.

‘Legally Blonde’

The Liberty Center Association for the Arts will present “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”

It will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 18, April 29, April 30, May 5, May 6, May 7 and at 2 p.m. May 1 at the Hayden Liberty Center, 111 W. Fifth St.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $17.50 for adults 62 and older, and $15 for students. 

This award-winning musical is based on the adored film. “Legally Blonde: The Musical” follows the transformation of Elle Woods when her life is turned upside down after her boyfriend dumps her to attend Harvard Law. Determined to win him back, she ingeniously charms her way into the school where she struggles with her peers and professors. With the support of new friends, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

‘Story of The Ozark Music Festival’

There will be a showing of the film, “The Story Of The Ozark Music Festival,” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29 at the Heckart Performing Arts Center at Smith-Cotton High School, 2010 Tiger Pride Blvd. 

Advance tickets will be available at Backwood Guitar, 120 S. Osage Ave. in Sedalia.

Missouri Barber grand opening

The Missouri Barber Company, 520 W. Broadway Blvd., will host a grand opening block party from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 30. 

Visitors can check out the shop and the party will include hot dogs, yard games, giveaways, foosball, and art displays from local artists.

Moonlight Market

Warrensburg Main Street and the Warrensburg Farmers’ Market will kick off the 2022 season with the Moonlight Market from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 30. 

Many of the regular season vendors as well as pop-up artisans will be around the Johnson County Courthouse square as well as live music and food trucks.

Tea and Auction

The Sedalia Area Literacy Council will host the annual Tea and Auction at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3700 W. Broadway Blvd. 

There will be pre-packaged snacks, tea, lemonade, mystery bags and boxes, baked potato bags, soup bowl cozies, purses, and, silent and live auctions.

Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided.

Bird Surveys

Volunteers are needed to assist with spring migration bird surveys at Knob Noster State Park.

Bird surveys are low-impact activities that require participants to walk slowly and document birds that are seen and heard.

Those who would like to participate should contact Chris Edmondson at Chris.Edmondson@dnr.mo.gov or 660-563-2463. Volunteers will meet Chris at the Knob Noster State Park visitor center at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 29. This activity is expected to last about two hours.

Artful Gardens

Powell Gardens, 1609 NW U.S. Highway 50 in Kingsville, will host Artful Gardens: Painted Garden from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 1. The cost is $50; members get a 10% discount.

To explore the connection between visual art and the natural world, join instructor Donna Houtteman of ArtBlocksKC for the latest installment in the Artful Gardens series.

The spring session includes a 90-minute session exploring artists that use springtime themes and flowers for their inspiration. After the presentation, guests will enjoy wine, beer, and light snacks while receiving a private guided tour of the Conservatory, as well as the spring blooms on display at Powell Gardens.

Wine Stroll

The Benton County Community Foundation will host a wine stroll at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30 in downtown Warsaw.

There will be 23 wineries, breweries and distilleries, seven food vendors, live music from The Groove Pilots, and the Benton County Art Walk. The art walk begins at 1 p.m. and features a visual arts display and contest featuring artists of all ages from Benton County, a marketplace of artisan vendors selling their original handiwork, and a silent auction featuring items from our vendors and other local businesses.

Tractor Cruise fundraiser

State Fair Community College’s Ag Club will host its first Tractor Cruise fundraiser on Saturday, April 30, with a round trip starting at the Sedalia campus to Green Ridge. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Drivers will meet at 9 a.m., and the cruise will begin at 9:30 a.m. 

Cost is $30 and $15 for FFA members. Lunch will be provided. Tractors have a minimum 10 mph requirement, and drivers must hold a valid driver’s license. No duals, implements or trailers allowed. 

Registration will take place the day of the event. The club accepts cash or checks only. Proceeds will be used to buy equipment and supplies for the Ag Club and to fund educational trips.

Spring plant sale 

State Fair Community College’s Horticulture Club will host a community spring plant sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 25-29; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 2-6 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 at Potter-Ewing Agriculture Building on the southwest corner of Sedalia campus past the Residence Hall. The campus address is 3201 W. 16th St.  

Plants for sale include a variety of annuals, perennials, bedding plants, vegetables and herbs, succulents, hanging baskets, and mixed containers. The club accepts cash or checks only. Proceeds will be used to buy equipment and supplies for the Horticulture program and to fund educational trips.
